Since our beginnings in 2016, we have undergone a transition where the performing arts are increasingly enriched by interdisciplinary approaches from fields such as psychology, geography, anthropology, and history. These disciplines are contributing new and diverse perspectives to artistic and research methodologies. This collaborative work has facilitated the diversification of our work at the local and regional levels, complementing the artistic and cultural foundation of Pájarx entre Púas. Adding to this process is our publishing arm, which serves as a critical and interdisciplinary line of inquiry. The Pájarx entre Púas publishing house is a space for discussion, research, and collective creation, seeking to critically examine the existence of prisons and punishment as a means of resolving social conflicts.
Our main objective is to recognize and make visible the survival strategies, camaraderie and affections of women and gender and sexual diversities who resist within the walls of prisons, through the editing, publication and dissemination of texts produced inside and outside of prison.
The publishing house aims to be a forum for discussing topics relevant to those of us involved with prisons: reintegration, punishment, anti-punitive approaches, motherhood, among many others that we are interested in exploring further. Along these lines, we would like to invite other organizations to reflect together on these and other issues relevant to the work of these organizations.
Based on these discussions, we have written, revised, and published, always considering the publishing house as a bridge for the development of the writing and thinking practices of people deprived of their liberty, and as a platform to reflect on ourselves and support each other in the various artistic and reparative processes.
Our working methodology is based on collective thinking and advocates for the written word to give voice to stories and experiences silenced by violence. We believe in collaborative work where we can think, write, self-edit, and, in the future, self-publish the written works produced by incarcerated individuals and the activists outside prison who provide support. We believe it is important to use colloquial, contextualized, and relevant language that allows many people to read and share these texts, making public something that is often hidden, stigmatized, and morally charged, such as life inside prison, but also before and after incarceration. We uphold the right to the written word as a form of denunciation, self-knowledge, creativity, and expression. We firmly believe that “There is no barrier, lock, or bolt that you can impose on the freedom of our minds.”
